Saturday Morning at the Ferry Building: San Francisco Masters the Markt

Saturday morning at the Ferry Building

San Franciscan’s Saturday morning activity of choice: an epicurean foray at the foot of Market Street. The Ferry Building Marketplace is made up of 65,000 square feet of large and small food stores and restaurants, not including the outdoor stalls. It is a destination appreciated by both locals and tourists and an opportunity to sample the city’s breads, cheeses, pastries, fruits, legumes, mushrooms, coffee, fish, and any other edible treat your heart may desire, all under one roof. Bakeries, food stores, coffee chains, and other sources know how important it is to show face at the Ferry Building. It is a palatable marketing ploy. Sample the city’s latest and greatest and support local artisans by asking your taste buds to spread the news.

First stop: Rev your engines with an individually prepared drip coffee at Blue Bottle Coffee Co.

Inside the building, the nave is lined with specialty food producers such as an olive oil merchant, a beehive business, and an herb kingdom. A few of my favorites include the Biscuit Bender, Acme Bread Company, Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker, and gluten-free baked goods from Mariposa Baking Co. My restaurant picks include Il Cane Rosso and Boulette’s Larder, but The Slanted Door is a must for any novice visitor to this religiously food-centric city.
